Have you ever changed your mind about assigning an activity, project, or essay because you thought to yourself, “I do not want to grade this”? Just us? From the time you collect that first assignment at the beginning of the year until you submit your final grades at the end, chances are you have a “to be graded” pile. It’s that nagging reminder that you aren’t quite as on top of things as you’d like to think you are. Managing the grading load is one of the worst parts of teaching, especially in the ELA classroom where the stacks of essays seem only to multiply exponentially the longer you procrastinate grading them. After years of trial and error, some failures and some successes, we’re ready to share our best strategies for grading papers without losing your mind!
