Episode 40: Is English Class Still Relevant? ELA Skills Students Need
Secondary English classes have, by and large, looked pretty much the same for decades. Sure, there are small changes here and there, a few innovators bucking the system, but most of us are holding on to the classics and traditional writing instruction. This is not because we’re lazy, philosophically opposed to change, or fully convinced our way is the best way to prepare our students with the ELA skills they need for post-secondary success.
In this episode of the podcast, we’re discussing whether traditional ELA instruction provides our students with the skills they most need outside of high school, or if we’re long overdue for an update. We don’t think we’re out of step with most ELA teachers in saying English classes are in need of an update, while also recognizing there are ELA skills that are still completely relevant in today’s society.
What changes are needed and who’s responsible for making them? Well, there’s a lot to discuss there.
