Episode 9: Finding an Independent Reading Program that Works for You
As English teachers, we know how important reading is. Good readers are better students . . . in all subject areas. Most of us are reading evangelists trying to spread the good news about all reading, especially reading recreationally. If your school is like ours, you’re probably asked to monitor students’ independent reading. Over the years, we have tried a lot of different independent reading activities, some of which were mildly torturous, some of which were jaw-droppingly torturous.
In this episode, we’re sharing the method of monitoring independent reading that worked best for us. Hint: It was not the oh-so-easy-to-forge reading log, nor was it the mind-numbingly boring to read summary. It was something that, while we chose to administer in writing, you could easily adapt to in-person reading conferences.
